Pablo Picasso was born in Spain on October 25th 1881. He was one of the greatest and most influential artists in the 20th century and the creator of cubism. Picasso was considered radical in his work, he was a painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist and stage designer. It was a sad passing on April 8th 1973.
Cubism is a beautiful type of artwork that Pablo Picasso created; it is loved all around the world. Our grade 5-6 class is creating our own Picasso’s just like Pablo’s. The turnout is great. We love creating them. They are definitely beautiful pieces of art. ~Karissa For the last hour of the day, every Wednesday, the students have been hard at work on their passion projects. Each of them developed an inquiry question on a topic of their choice. The grade 5/6 class is covering a wide range of subjects. They spent as much time as needed researching their answers. After their research was done, the students chose a format to present and share their findings. Here are some examples of their hard work. "Autonomous motivation promotes greater conceptual understanding, better grades, enhanced persistence at school and in sporting activities, higher productivity, less burnout, and greater level of psychological well-being." ~Daniel Pink “Essential Questions are structured as open-ended inquiries that do not have an obvious, simple, or specific answer. In fact, a person’s response to a question may change over time as his or her understanding of the topic or issue expands, illustrating the fluid and evolving nature of knowledge.” ~Karen Brown "A classroom of teachers, is a classroom of learners.” ~Daniel Pink
I am looking forward to see what these students produce next! Mrs. Remy The students recently finished writing some "Found Poetry." They scanned novels, textbooks, magazines, writer's notebooks, etc. for words and phrases that reminded them of the theme respect. They rearranged their findings to create their own original poems. Here are some of the results. Mrs. Remy
The student's creative side has been in overdrive. For this project students used large black paper as their background. They drew scenes using chalk. They inserted themselves into the picture. Photographs were taken and this is the result... It was so much fun!
Mrs. Remy On Wednesday morning, the grade 3 to 8 students of West Central Public School hosted some members of the Prince Albert Raiders. Josh Morrisey, Sawyer Lange, Craig Leverton, and Graeme Craig spoke to the students about the importance of not bullying. They showed two very powerful videos, that were difficult not to relate to. Thank you to those young gentleman for sharing their thoughts on the elimination of bullying. It is always a topic of discussion in schools and classrooms and it helps to have the perspective of others. Mrs. Remy
Congratulations to the West Central Girls' 6/7/8 basketball team for their win against Westview in the B-Side Final. It was a hard fought game with West Central coming out ahead 38-18. The fans also proved plentiful in the crowd. Thank-you for all your support! Go Wolverines!
Mrs. Remy The poster featured here was divided into 32 pieces. Each student was given 1-3 pieces of the poster to replicate on an 8.5" x 11" piece of paper using oil pastels. The students practiced the skill of drawing to scale. They divided their piece of the poster and their sheet of white paper into six sections. They worked on one section at a time. The puzzle is not complete, but I will update this post when all the students have finished their piece of the puzzle. It looks great with what we have so far! Mrs. Remy Update...
It was an exciting day in math today. The grade 6 class finished up a 10 day math problem on Understanding Fractions. To celebrate the accomplishment we treated ourselves to sub sandwiches for lunch. We simulated the problem we solved in class. We had to evenly distribute a set number of subs, to a certanin number of students in the class. Each student had to have an equal share and we had to find a reasonable landmark fraction to cut the sub. We explored a lot of different concepts: denominators and a numerators, value of different fractions and equivalent fractions. We will expand our understanding in the next couple of weeks to include mixed numbers, improper fractions and how decimals, fractions, and percent are related.
Bon Appetit, Mrs. Remy To start the new year, we are trying something new and exciting in the classroom. Every Wednesday, the last hour of the day, we will engage in Genius Hour. During this time students will engage in passionate and creative learning. Students will formulate a burning question, design a project, research the answer and share their hard work. For a more detailed explanation please watch the video... To launch Genius Hour and to provide some inspiration for projects, the following videos were shown... Student interest in Genius Hour is high. There are some really interesting project ideas emerging.I am looking forward to seeing where the students go with this.
