It was an exciting day in math today. The grade 6 class finished up a 10 day math problem on Understanding Fractions. To celebrate the accomplishment we treated ourselves to sub sandwiches for lunch. We simulated the problem we solved in class. We had to evenly distribute a set number of subs, to a certanin number of students in the class. Each student had to have an equal share and we had to find a reasonable landmark fraction to cut the sub.
We explored a lot of different concepts: denominators and a numerators, value of different fractions and equivalent fractions. We will expand our understanding in the next couple of weeks to include mixed numbers, improper fractions and how decimals, fractions, and percent are related.
To start the new year, we are trying something new and exciting in the classroom. Every Wednesday, the last hour of the day, we will engage in Genius Hour. During this time students will engage in passionate and creative learning. Students will formulate a burning question, design a project, research the answer and share their hard work.

To launch Genius Hour and to provide some inspiration for projects, the following videos were shown...
Student interest in Genius Hour is high. There are some really interesting project ideas emerging.I am looking forward to seeing where the students go with this.
