Hi I'm Karissa. I'm 11 and in grade 6. I love playing volleyball and riding horses. I'm on the West Central volleyball team. We have a great volleyball team! Our team is a grade 5-8 team with 13 players. On Thursday, we played Westview and beat them, we won 3 out of 4 games. We have many small players but they have big hearts. We can be all goofy during practices and then be perfect during our games, we try to participate as much as we can or they substitute us with other players on our team. We get our whole group on the court in the hour we get to practice or play. We love our sport so much. We try our hardest. We are the West Central Wolverines! GO WOLVERINES! Karissa (Guest Blogger)

Math is my favorite subject to teach. I am always looking for new material to enhance my math classes. The grade 6 math class has been studying about prime and composite numbers the last few days. The following is a video of a gentleman whose enthusiasm for prime numbers surpasses even my own. His passion for math is infectious. I completely agree with him. Math is beautiful! I wonder when they will find the next Mega Prime. In Art News...The students have been hard at work on their third art project. In this one, the students traced their hands and feet on a large sheet of paper, they fill in the picture with a body and a head. It gives the illusion of someone falling into (whatever the artist chooses). Here are some preliminary pictures... The students are colouring with pencil crayon; so this has been a long and tedious project. The results are going to be awesome!
Mrs. Remy We spent Friday afternoon walking, as it was West Central's annual walk-a-thon. We were blessed with great weather; not too hot and not too cold, perfect marching conditons. The walk started at the school and we walked 1.5km west on Bannerman Road and all the way back to the school. Congratualtions to all the students this year. Everyone who participated completed the entire walk! A big thank you to all the parents and siblings who came and walked with us. You made our afternoon stroll extra special. We even had a four legged member of the West Central Family join us. Your participation is appreciated. The grand total raised in this year's Walk-a-Thon is... $2 631.45Congratulations West Central Wolverines for all your hard work!!! Mrs. Remy
We have been working really hard and have finally finished our art project, "Up and Over!" For this project, the students had to draw the top half of their faces. They used mirrors to get the details of their portraits just right... For the bottom half of their projects they searched the internet for inspiring quotes about friendship. The results were amazing! Be sure to check out their art work if you are in the school. Mrs. Remy
Here is our route for x-country running. We ran a total of 0.98km. Our next run is Tuesday at PMP. Go Wolverines! Mrs. Remy ELAWe are starting a new unit in our Literacy in Action, entitled Stories of Our Lives. The purpose of this unit is to help the students talk about, read, write about, listen to, and create fictional stories. We will be learning about the different forms of fiction, the elements that make up fictional stories, and the importance of word choice and voice. Our goal is to read realistic fiction with a critical eye, think of the author's purpose, and keep in mind stereotyping, bias, and point of view as he or she reads. You are invited to be part of our unit in a variety of ways. For example,
Math 6In math, we are currently working on the unit Understanding Numbers. In this unit students will:

Take advantage of a free math game. Equivalent Fractions, is a game of solitaire matching equivalent fractions. This game complements our upcoming unit on fractions. Mrs. Remy
In math, we are currently working on outcomes from the Number Strand. My math class is Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) friendly. The following apps for the iPod touch are the math games that will complement math instruction in the current unit we are working on "Number Sense". If students have completed their class work early, they are free to play one of the following suggested games to help practice their basic math facts. I also encourage students to play these at home. My favorite current favorite game is Factor Samurai. My highest score is 89 at the Apprentice level. Think you can beat me? Mrs. Remy

Today is the first day of classes. I am so excited! I got to school early this morning to make sure everything was in order for when the students arrive. I am looking forward to a great 2013-2014 school year. I have lots of great ideas for the classroom. This summer I completed the first two classes towards my Master's in Curriculum and Instruction. I spent three weeks collaborating with other teachers, sharing ideas for activities to do in the classroom. There was a heavy focus on writing, I am excited to see how these activies will apply in our classroom. I am looking forward to hearing about all the stories my students have about their summer holidays. Welcome back Grade 5/6!!! 3:25... It was a busy first day back. The students and I were busy getting our classroom in order. I love going through new school supplies, there is nothing like a fresh bouquet of pencils to brighten up a classroom. We started with a bang! We immediately began with writing exercises in our Writer's Notebook. First, the students wrote about the summer experience of a classmate, then the students wrote a response to the following video: What do you think of this video? He speaks a little fast but I love his enthusiam for public education!
